About
Serial entrepreneur, keynote speaker, author, and co-founder of FlipWork. Nikki Barua has spent 25 years building companies and helping leaders reinvent how they work.

Hi, I'm Nikki
Success is not a strategy for what comes next. Every playbook is built for conditions, and when the conditions change, the leaders most exposed are the ones it worked best for.
AI multiplies whatever judgment it is given. That raises the value of judgment, taste, and responsibility rather than lowering it, which is why I treat reinvention as a leadership discipline with a cadence rather than a crisis response.
The pattern I keep returning to is that institutions do not transform. Leaders transform them. That is why I co-founded FlipWork.
My Story
It was a warm, sunny day in June 1997 when I stepped foot in America for the first time. As an immigrant from India, I had a heart full of hope and a suitcase filled with dreams.
The obstacles I expected were practical: a new society, new norms, entirely new skills. The hardest one was not. I checked many boxes of diversity and still felt on the outside of every inner circle.
In my desperation to belong, I changed myself to fit a box defined by others. The more I became like everyone else, the less of me there was to see.
My transformation began when I stopped trying to fit into someone else's world and started being myself, unapologetically.
By 1999 I had three master's degrees and started a corporate career that taught me how to make very large organizations move faster than they believed they could. In 2011 I left to do it on my own terms. BeyondCurious took leading brands from idea to product in weeks. I made elephants run.
My book, Beyond Barriers, became an Amazon bestseller in 2018 and changed what I wanted to work on. I exited BeyondCurious in 2019 and founded Beyond Barriers, taking the book's name, applying innovation at speed to careers instead of products. I led it as CEO until 2024.
By 2025 the ground had shifted again. AI made competent work cheap, and the exposure landed hardest on exactly the people who had done everything right: educated, credentialed, senior. So I built FlipWork.
Every setback has been a reinvention, and each time I built something bigger.
Explore SpeakingMy Purpose
I have spent 25 years watching what happens when people stop underestimating themselves, and I am now watching what happens when leaders stop underestimating what becomes possible when human judgment and AI work together. My purpose is to help as many leaders as possible make that shift deliberately rather than late. It is the work I do each week in Reinvention Roadmap, on stage, and at FlipWork.
The Book
My book on reinvention, resilience, and the mindset shifts that let ambitious people stop fitting in and start standing out. It is a book about agency, identity, and choice.
It began with the story you just read. Long before AI changed the rules, reinvention was how I learned to lead. The book is where I first wrote that down.

My Values
Clarity over caution
I start from what I want to be true and work backward. A vision described precisely is easier to test, and easier for other people to join.
Imperfection over inaction
Waiting for complete clarity hands the decision to circumstances. I would rather make a reversible move early than a correct one late.
Change over certainty
Expertise stays valuable while it stays open to new evidence. When I am defending a position rather than testing it, I have stopped being useful.
Impact over inertia
Agency is exercised through choices, not held as a trait. Most of the time the choice is available and I have simply not made it yet.
Community over competition
My winning does not require someone else to lose. Helping other people get where they are going has never cost me anything I needed.
