Build for the Century, Not the Quarter

Oct 05, 2025

I caught up with an old friend this weekend. We swapped stories about our careers, the wins and the setbacks, the pivots and the lessons.

Then he said something that I haven’t stopped thinking about:
“My whole career has been about building skyscrapers.”

Skyscrapers rise fast. They dominate the skyline. They send a signal of power and wealth. But they are also temporary. Within a few decades, they are out of style, outdated, torn down, or replaced.

He realized that in the pursuit of quick wins and fast growth, he had sacrificed something more profound - meaning and fulfillment.

I shared with him the idea of "cathedral thinking".

Cathedral thinking is a mindset of building for the long term with projects so ambitious they extend beyond one lifetime.

The medieval cathedrals are masterpieces that took centuries to complete. Generations of builders worked with the humility of knowing they would never see the masterpiece finished, but trusted that their work was part of something enduring.

Cathedral thinking demands patience, craft, and devotion. It asks us to serve a vision that outlives us, with outcomes that outlast us.

👉 Skyscrapers are monuments to ambition.

👉 Cathedrals are monuments to purpose.

When the pace of change tempts us to think short term, cathedral thinking is what keeps us anchored.

And the data tells us the same story: CEO tenures are shorter than the transformations they attempt, companies that think long-term outperform, and quarterly pressures still sabotage real progress.

The choice is clear: build for the century, not the quarter. Lead with a horizon longer than your own timeline.

THIS WEEK'S INSIGHTS

  • Trend: Transformation outlasts leader’s tenure
  • Tip: Compound short term wins into legacy
  • Tool: Build on research for enduring results

TRENDS

CEO tenures are shorter than transformation

Average CEO tenure is down to 6.7 years, but most corporate transformations take 7–10 years to realize full impact. Leaders must design beyond their own tenure if they want their work to endure.

Companies that think long-term outperform

Companies with long-term strategies delivered 47% higher revenue growth over 15 years compared to peers focused on short-term results. Long-term stewardship provides the growth advantage.

Quarterly pressures sabotage real progress

Over 70% of executives say pressure for quarterly earnings undermines long-term investment. Breaking free from short term thinking is the only way to create lasting trust.

TIPS

From Short-Term Targets → Long-Term Stewardship

Old Model: Quarterly performance targets

New Model: Century-long relevance and trust

Strategy: Balance urgency with endurance by widening time horizons

Action Step: In your next planning session, add a “10-year impact” column beside quarterly goals

From Tool Adoption → Capability Building

Old Model: Rapid deployment of new tools

New Model: Culture change and sustained capability

Strategy: Shift focus from implementation speed to learning depth

Action Step: Launch one recurring skill-building ritual and sustain it for 90 days

From Operator → Steward

Old Model: Making today’s decisions

New Model: Shaping futures beyond your tenure

Strategy: Lead as a custodian of what endures, not just an executor of tasks

Action Step: Write a one-page “legacy memo” on what should endure from your work 10 years out

TOOLS

Consensus

An AI research engine that scans academic papers and surfaces evidence-backed answers. Anchor your vision in enduring evidence.

Prompt: “What do the latest peer-reviewed studies say about AI’s impact on employee productivity?”

Miro

Turns brainstorming into structured strategy maps with sticky notes, clusters, and patterns. Leverage ideas to build blueprints that last beyond one meeting.

Prompt: “Analyze these 15 ideas and cluster them into 3 strategic themes with suggested next steps.”

Craft

A modern writing and strategy doc tool that combines structure with design polish. Transform rough thinking into memos that influence for years.

Prompt: “Turn my rough notes into a 1-page strategy memo with sections for context, risks, and actions.”

What’s one cathedral you’re willing to start building even if you never see it finished?

Until next time...stay curious!

When Success Becomes Your Biggest Threat
It’s 2:07am. The house is silent, but I’m wide awake, scrolling. Headline after headline about AI flashes across my phone. I'm simultaneously giddy with excitement about the future and terrified about its implications. Isn't this the most transformative time in modern human history? The future of work is changing faster than any of us expected. New ways of creating, collaborating, and contri...
The Question You’re Not Asking
A few years ago, I was in a strategy session with a leadership team under intense pressure. Investors demanded better results. Employees craved direction. And all eyes turned to the C-suite for answers. But the reality was murkier. New technologies were rewriting business models. Competitors were making bets no one could predict. The team was searching for a definitive plan in a landscape wh...
Avoid the Biggest Risk in AI Adoption
Everywhere I go, leaders are talking about AI. Boardrooms are buzzing, executive offsites are packed with demos, and CEOs are racing to prove they have a plan. Yet too often, the conversation fixates on tools: Which AI platform should we buy? How quickly can we deploy it?  And yet, 95% of AI pilots are failing! Why? Because of a lack of organizational readiness, failure to integrate AI with ...
